Swimming with Crocs
We just got back from our Kakadu tour and decided to inform all you guys with our latest adventures right before we would go back home. So this is going to be our last story from down under. We’ve had an awesome time in the top end of Australia seing a lot of dangerous animals and great landscapes.
The first day we were picked up from our accommodation in Darwin. This is were we met our group, a total of 16 travellers and one tour guide, Jane aka GI Jane. We booked a 4WD tour so we thought we were going on a Toyota Landcruiser type of vehicle, but it turned out to be a big 4WD truck. Also here started our bad luck for the day, Jane was late because of some logistical problems. This bad luck followed us the entire day, which gave Jane a hard time getting everything organised! Since we were still in Darwin we had to drive to Kakadu, which took us about 2 hours. On the way there we stopped to do a little boatcruise on a billabong (which is an aboriginal word for waterhole). Here we had to wait for the next tour since we were late. The billabong was the habitat of numerous species of (water) birds, salties (salt water crocs), freshies (fresh water crocs) and eagles. The funny thing was, our boat driver didn’t particularly like a certain crocodile hunter and he didn’t pretend to hide it either. All in all it was a pretty nice experience and we did see some nice salties as well! The rest of the day we went to see some rock art and walked to a beautiful lookout were we had a good look on huge floodplains. After sunset we arrived at our campsite were Jane just explained that there were hot showers, toilets, etcetera. Then the campsite manager turned up and told us that there wasn’t any hot water due to a problem with the water pump.. and if it wasn’t enough a King Brown snake had been spotted prior to our arrival on the spot were we were supposed to camp for the night. So we had all the bad luck of the tour in one day!
The second day we went to Twin Falls and Jim Jim falls. In order to get there we had to drive over a 4WD track. Jane didn’t particularly drive slowly so everybody and everything were thrown all over the truck. A few times we even managed to lift off with the back wheels! It is good that we had seat belts otherwise everybody would have ended up with a heavy concussion! It was great fun though!! The falls were pretty nice, although there wasn’t much water coming down since we’re in the dry season at the moment. However, it gave us the opportunity to refreshen in some nice rock pools. In the afternoon we drove to our camping spot for the night and stopped on our way to see the sunset over Yellow River, which was really beautiful! Again we had to set up camp during night time. Since there was still water near us there were HEAPS of mozzies… The next Morning Rinske counted here mosquito bite and ended up with a staggering 131 mosquito buites all over her body…
The third day we had an aboriginal culture camp were we learned some things about how aboriginals use certain plants to cook and make tools. We also were able to practice our spear throwing skills! Unfortunately no one was able to reach one of the targets which were set up. After culture camp we went to a nice pool were we could refresh ourselves. Since we were on a combination tour, in the afternoon we dropped of the people who were on the three day tour. 7 of the 16 passengers left us. After this we drove to our camping spot for the night.
The fourth day we went for a canoe trip in Katherine gorge. We were also allowed to swim everywhere, we only couldn’t dock our boat on the breading grounds of crocs… Since there weren’t living any salties in Katherine gorge it isn’t really dangerous. Unless you pull the tail of a freshie or poke him in the eye he wouldn’t attack you. However, it was a very comforting thought to be swimming in croc territory.. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see any freshies.. In the afternoon we drove up to our next camping spot which was an old airstrip which was used back in WW II. The airsrip was a great place to stay, since we had the entire place to ourselves and we were allowed to make a big bonfire. We arrived just after sunset, but the sky was still nice to look at and make photographs of with the airstrip in the foreground. Since we were allready four days underway with our entire group we got to now each other pretty well and had a lot of fun during the evenings.
The fifth day we went to Lichfield were we saw a few very touristic waterfalls and swimming holes. Although there were a lot of people there it didn’t whithold a water monitor to come down and play with us! The last billabong we went to was a more private one which our tourcompany had a special permit for. After a short walk we saw another beautifull waterfall. We swam a bit around and planted an organge at the top of the waterfall. After all the swimming and other cool stuff we finally had to say good bye to each other.
So this was our last story down under and we’re now going to enjoy our last day here in Darwin and prepare for the horrendous flight back home!
